All trusts in England except one will stop using fax machines this month, HSJ has learned.

The final three trusts to be using fax machines for “everyday use” were recently revealed by Wes Streeting.

Despite the health secretary stating it would take at least 12 months for the trusts to phase them out, two have since confirmed they will not be using them after this month.

University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust told HSJ its final fax machine was disconnected last week, while Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said its machines would be decommissioned by the end of January.

The final one, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, has confirmed it will phase out the use of the machines over the next year.

LTHT chief digital information officer Paul Jones said it uses faxes for “several business-critical and high-risk processes” including across pharmacy services, blood bank operations, oncology, and clinical trial units.

Date: 22 January
