The Procurement Supply Chain team have worked with the Trust’s just-in-time wholesaler, Squadron Medical to change deliveries into Main Theatres from cardboard boxes to tote boxes.  The change has increased the put-away speed for the overnight supply chain team by a third, reduced the risk of damage to clinical supplies during shipment and designed out four large green bin containers of cardboard each night, this equates to over 1,000 containers per year equivalent to 714 tonnes of CO2.

Each green bin container costs the Trust £77 each to dispose and so the new delivery model will save over £80k per year in reduced waste management costs.

Adam Broad, the new Supply Chain Director advised, “the team are now aiming to expand the change to cover other high volume areas with the aim to further reduce the level of cardboard waste and save over 1,000 tonnes of CO2”
