Overdue payments by trusts running to tens of millions of pounds have sparked a fresh row with suppliers, who have warned the situation is “not sustainable”.
HSJ has learned the Healthcare Distribution Association, which represents medicines suppliers, has raised its concerns with NHS England after a survey of its members suggested trusts owed around £40m in late payments.
NHSE has told trusts they must pay suppliers in line with contracted timelines – but many trusts regularly fail to pay within the 30-day deadline. It is understood suppliers are becoming increasing frustrated by the lack of enforcement action by national leaders, with the HDA warning drug deliveries could be withheld if the matter is not resolved.
