Four chief finance officers make up this year’s shortlist for the HFMA Finance Director of the Year Award – three from provider organisations and one from an integrated care board.

Jane Hazelgrave is the ICB candidate (Humber and North Yorkshire) and joins Hardev Virdee (Barts Health NHS Trust), Tim Glenn (Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) and Sarah Brampton (University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust) to complete the line-up. Final judging is due to take place this month, with the winner announced at a ceremony during the HFMA annual conference in London at the beginning of December.

The Royal Papworth trust also provides one of the candidates for the Deputy Finance Director Award, with the trust’s Sophie Harrison joining Johanna Bogle (Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Michael Costello (NHS Business Services Authority) in a three-strong shortlist. Three finance departments will also compete for the title of Finance Team of the Year, with judges set to choose between teams from One Devon NHS, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough integrated care system and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

In total, 11 awards are up for grabs again this year. The two new awards last year – the Environmental Sustainability Award and the Addressing Health Inequalities Through NHS Finance Action Award – have been continued with three high quality submissions shortlisted in each category.

The Royal Papworth is in fact competing for a total of three awards this year, with the trust also featuring on the shortlist for the Diversity and Inclusion Award. But several other trusts are in the mix for two awards. Barts Health will compete in the health inequalities category, while also providing one of the finance director candidates.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is on the shortlist for both the Environmental Sustainability Award and the Havelock Award, which recognises best practice in finance skills development. The One Devon NHS integrated care system makes a second appearance, this time in the Governance Award shortlist. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is another double contender, being in the mix for the Delivering Value with Digital Technology Award as well as the finance team category.
