Two more people with finance sector backgrounds have been appointed as NHS England associate non-executive directors.

Suresh Viswanathan is chief operating officer at Nationwide Building Society and has 35 years of experience in the banking sector, with a focus on technology and operations.

Tanuj Kapilashrami is chief strategy and talent officer at Standard Chartered Bank and previously worked at HSBC for 17 years, as well as holding other non-executive director posts, including for Sainsbury’s.

As associates, they will attend board meetings but not have a vote.

Their appointments follow those of four NEDs to full board positions – from NHS, academic, political and business backgrounds – in February, following a long delay in government recruitment approval.

In an announcement, NHSE chair Richard Meddings, who himself had a long career in senior banking positions, said of the two new associates: “Their experience in digital transformation and workforce transformation will offer the organisation a fresh perspective as we build the right culture among staff across the NHS while we continue to recover services following the pandemic.”
