Howard Rolfe
Procurement Director
East of England Collaborative Procurement Hub
What are you most proud of?
There are proud moments from different times in my life. I am proud of my family, the team and their work at the Procurement Hub, my career at Marks and Spencer which included chairing a review of procurement in the NHS and the establishment of PASA, and being the Leader of a District Council.
What makes you angry?
Bigotry, intolerance, aggressive behaviour. Corrupt politicians.
What sports team do you support (if any)?
Several. English cricket and rugby, Tottenham Hotspur. A good winter weekend is being at Twickenham for an English win and then following a Spurs victory – it happened once this year!
Which famous person would you most like to meet and why?
I have been interested in politics for most of my life but I wont go there. I would love to spend time with a former English cricket captain, Mike Brearley. He took over when England were down and out in the 1981 Ashes and won the series through extraordinary leadership. What were the techniques he employed?
What superpower would you most like to have and why?
I think in today’s (or even previous) world I would like to have the power to deliver world peace and equality.
What historical figure do you most admire and why?
Probably someone who is selfless – Florence Nightingale or Mother Theresa – their work came from the heart. One has to admire Winston Churchill for being so determined that Britain would not be overcome.
What’s your perfect weekend?
Having a drink with the guys on Friday evening. Seeing the family on Saturday and then something later – a meal, theatre, concert, party (not usually everything on the same night!). On Sunday I potter in the garden. Alternatively going away for the weekend and being near a beach.
What’s your favourite meal?
Fish of all varieties with a decent white Burgundy.
Can you describe yourself in one word?
No! I hope I am easy to relate to, kind, determined and supportive.
What do you hope to be doing 5 years from now? Walking beside the ocean.
Date: 16 April
